Great Depression site comment
I was more interested in the pictures and literary writings of the site. I went to the site called The Magpie Sings the Great Depression. The works on this site gave an insight of the people’s lives during the Depression. I read the poem "Subway Beggar" by Grachow. It made me think about how our society has pushed beggars away when they truly needed it, but how we have accepted help from a stranger before without even thinking twice. The Great Depression caused many beggars to show up on the streets, but President Hoover, and others, would not help them (hints the name Hoovervilles). The drawings on this site illustrated how many people struggled through the times, but how some just kept living their normal lives. There was a drawing about the Harlem Renaissance that showed two boys dancing while a black man was playing the guitar.
The pictures on the main site were divided into several sections. I looked at the posters and prints. All of the public health ones were about cancer and the need to fight it. As it was 60 or more years ago, cancer awareness is still a big part of our society today. I also looked at the transportation photos since it is my group’s theme for our timeline. You can see the changes that transportation underwent in all of the photos, such as highways or bridges. Under the posters and prints section, there was one interesting drawing called the forgotten cow. It made me think about our society nowadays and also the society back then (how there are many forgotten cows out there). I will leave it for you all to ponder about….

I also went to the Magpie Sings the Great Depression. I found it extremely interesting, especially since it is about high schoolers. I was surprised when I found out that so much art could come out of such a sad time. I agree that the site gave an insight of people's lives during the Depression. I found it amazing that many writers and artists came out of the Depression. I also found it sad that many beggars arose from it. That clip we watched helped show how President Hoover tried to help, but didn't understand how to. I also found the drawings very interesting, especially the forgotten cow.
The magpie sings is a wonderful addition to this website, as it helps you understand the lives of high school students during the depression. This site helped you realize how much devastation was truly out there during this time, as it talked about the amount of people simply begging for help and getting nothing.
Where in the world is this "Magpie Sings the Great Depression"?? I couldn't/can't find it anywhere. And everyone's saying how it provides a good insige on how teens felt during the Great Depression, so it makes me more eager to read the article because we can try and relate to the teens.
Sadly, I couldn't find the drawing about the forgotten cow either, which explains the inability of a 5 year-old (or just me) to successfully navigate through this site.
I found the magpie sings as necessary to the website for high school students like us. It helps us understand the severe conditions of the Great Depression by allowing us to relate to it. I also found it pretty amazing that writers and especially artists used their talents to get through the Depression and later used them during the New Deal to get back to economic stability. I really liked the 'forgotton cow' drawing as well.
