Loyalists
- Stayed loyal to Britain
- 19,000 fought for the British
- 60-70 thousand left after the war to live in another British colony
Slaves
- 50,000 deserted their owners
- 20,000 evacuated to Canada
- Slaves in New England fought for America to win their freedom
Indians
- Preferred the British over the Americans because they believed that the British would let them keep their land
Yorktown
- Last major battle of the Revolutionary War
- French blockaded the English from escaping by sea
- Washington and Lafayette attacked by land
- General Cornwallis surrenders
Treaty of Paris- Ended the war
- Things to remember:
1. British acknowledged American independence
2. American Western Boundary = Mississippi River
3. Southern Boundary = Everything except for Spanish Florida
4. Northern Boundary = Canada and the Great Lakes
5. Eastern Boundary = Atlantic Ocean
6. Americans have the right to fish off of Newfoundland (which was part of the British empire)
7. Loyalist property was to be returned to its rightful owners
8. Loyalists were not to be persecuted
9. The United States of America to place no obstacles to stop British merchants from collecting legitimate debts
General Cornwallis officially surrendered and signed the treaty on October 19th 1781.
