Following the Declaration of Independence the states were formed.
States wrote up individual Constitutions to limit the governments power
Popular Soverignty stated that the power of the government came from the people
Most States had two houses of legilature three had one house throughout the states the legislative branch was the strongest. It laid out and defined individual rights. Some states had more distinct qualifications for the upper house or senate. The senate was elected by either an electoral college, the lower house, or a vote by the people.
Most states had a Bill of Rights in their constitution.
Virginia had three branches of government the legislative was purposely made stronger and even selected the governor and his advisors it also selected all judges above justice of the peace so basically all higher judges. The governor had no power to veto legislature and no patronage (governors ability to make appointments).
Lower House was elected every year upper house every four years.
Virginia Declaration of Rights was Virginia's Bill of Rights.
It said citizens were entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and called for religious freedom, due process and so on and so forth.
The Battle of Saratoga turns the tide of the Revolution. The French ally with the americans because of the significant victory. It was the first large vistory of the war and raised the morale of the Continental army.
The French and Americans formed the Permanent Alliance where France agrees to recognize american independence and to keep fighting until Britain recognizes Americas independence.
Second Continental Congress governs the states before the war. Articles of Confederation set up first national government that is made intentionally weaker then the states. National Government could not tax so it had to ask states for money to pay debts. The Articles did not create a strong unified government it was hindered by many limitations. It could not raise its own army, there was no executive branch, no judicial branch, and amendments had to have a unanimous vote.
