Patawomecks
It is very sad that the Patawomecks, who played a major role in the development of American history, don't even have state recognition. Before the Europeans arrived, the Indians were the inhabitants of North America, and now they are not even recognized. It isn't right that they have to go through time-consuming processes when they should automatically receive state and federal recognition. Even worse is that some Patawomeck's were and still are ashamed of their heritage and dont acknowledge it. It is wrong that people look condescendingly down on the Indians when without them, Jamestown most likely would not have survived. Although Pocahontas made a great deal of progress with the Indian and colonist realtionship, she actually began the Americans conquering and dominance of the Indians. Without her alliance with John Smith, then later John Rolphe, society as it is now may be completely different.

I completely agree that it really isn't fair because of the long process that it takes to make someone recognized. Without the Patawomecks, there might be no Stafford as it is (no matter how boring!). It's disappointing that we don't treat people better. We need to realize that these people were a part of our country just as much as we are.
I think it's unfortunate that the state makes it so difficult for tribes like the Patawomecks to gain recognition. It's also really upsetting that the Smithonian has taken some Native American remains and will not give them(or other articles) back. The Patawomecks have been very important in the history of our country(helping the colonist). I think it's really important that these tribes dont give up their heritage(they shouldn't have to feel ashamed) and i hope that the tribes get recognition.
I thought it was interesting how much is known about the Indian villages during the time of colonist by archialogical digs and records. It's really sad that so many of the tribes were killed in wars and such by europeans(even though the Patawomecks for instance were peaceful and even allies with the Europeans). I think it's really good that the survivors have made up the present day tribe and that their history is being uncovered.
I agree with you. It isn't fair! The Indians, of several tribes, have helped the settlers over the years, but cannot be recognized. It's sad that they cannot get their ancestoral remains. It shows how prejudice still remains in our society and people are using 'red tape' to hurt others.
Yeah it is pretty sad how the people that made up a large amount of American history don't even get state or federal recognition. And people should always be proud of where they came from, and with an ancestoral history like this, I don't know why many Native Americans are ashamed and embarrassed to be Native Americas and to be related to them.
I agree with everyone else. The Patawomecks made up our society possible, and they can't even get a little piece of mind. HOW RUDE.
I think it's disappointing how the state makes it troubling for tribes like the Patawomecks to gain historic recognition. The Patawomecks have been very important in the history of our country. I thought it was interesting how much is known about the Indian villages during the time of colonists. There is more depth than I thought. I hope discoveries continue to be made and build on the hisory our textbooks are so breif on.
I agree the Patawomecks should definately obtain federal recognition. Without the Patawomecks, Jamestown would not have survived. Also, our country would not have survived without the help of the Indians. We owe them so much, and we definately owe them federal recognition.
