Response to the Article

Yet again, another article that points out the minor details of the early settlement for Jamestown. I knew there were Indians near and around the area, but not actually in Stafford County. More and more interesting facts about this county are being revealed. I found the article very interesting. I believe everyone should research about their ancestors and know who they truly are, even though it may not be accepted or acknowledged. I am actually 1/8 Native American.

It is amazing how much you can learn from someone's belongings, such as Smith's journal, and the stories passed down from generation to generation. The Patawomecks helped the settlers, including John Smith from the Jamestown settlement, with food and information. Since Powhatan would not help them, Pocahontas's mother (a Patawomeck) and Pocahontas persuaded the tribe to help the settlers. The settlers would not have survived without their help. The Patawomecks aided the development of this great country and should not be ignored.

The discrimination from the Racial Intergity Law makes people not want to acknowledge their Native American heritage, and soon the wonderous culture may even disappear. I think it is very sad that the Native Americans cannot receive their ancestors' bones and belongings, which are now displayed in a museum. Sure, people may want to see the artifacts in the museum, but I think we should be respectful and allow the Indians to decide what happens to their ancestors' remains.

Amy,
I think you're absolutely correct in stating the injustice that the Racial Integrity Law caused, and the fact that it caused so much rich ancestry to go into hiding. Although not one of the "nicer" aspects of history, it's probably something we need to know about anyways. It's also very interesting to know that you yourself have Native American heritage and happen to live in Stafford County.

You are right. The achievement of the Potawomecks should not be ignored. Without their contribution to the nation, Jmaestown would have never survived.

Amy-so this basically looks exactly like the article. I think it's pretty cool that they found artifacts because old things can often times tell what life was like in earlier times. I think that every afrtifact of these tribes should be given back to the tribe's families. O yeah, my B for suggesting Pocahantos;Your right, I should focus on my education first and foremost. Fun comes later.

Your right, Amy, the descemdans of the Indians should be allowed the remains and arifacts of their ancestors. Its a shame that people are ashamed of their heritage. Hopefuly, more people will appreciate the role the Patawomecks to US history.

Amy I agree with you on the fact that tribal artifacts should remain with their ancestral families rather than a different party taking it away because thats what they have for memories afterall. Also the racial laws that were set ruined the growing generation during the time which had an effect on the contribution to heritage and culture. Overall its good to know information on history of Stafford.

It is interesting that textbooks skim over many facts and majority of the time make the American's seem like the good ones and the Indians the bad. It has taken this long to actually learn interesting facts about the Indians, 400 years later.Over the years Indians have gotten a bad connotation to the point where it is hard for them to get the credit they deserve. Like getting the remains of their ancestors. I find it not in the Smithsonian's hands to keep precious remains that meant so much to the Patawomecks. What would have happened if this tribe never existed? Would Jamestown of survived? And would we be where we are today?
