New Deal Comment

Yes I am late but better now than never.....

I really like the pictures. There was over 5,000 images. I didn't get to look at all of them but I did look at quite a few. The are very good and gives you a good idea of what it was like. As I think I have stated before I learn better by visually seeing things. Thanks for the site Mr. G! :)

Notes for March 5, 2007
Here are the notes:
- The American Communist Party, an organization that took it’s orders from Moscow gained strength
- Second New Deal
o Roosevelt turned to “underconsumption” as a philosophical underpinning
o Argument had been made that a chronic weakness in consumer demand had caused the Great Depression.
§ Therefore boosting consumer demand was the way to stimulate the economy.
- Roosevelt turned to deficit spending (Keynesianism)
- Committee for Industrial Organizations (CIO) within the AFL and created friction with skilled craft unions, so the Congress of Industrial Organizations was created.
- CIO had a huge success when the United Auto Workers took on General Motors with a sit-down strike. Neither the State nor Federal government did anything.
- 2nd new deal major legislation
o Social Security Act- money for the elderly, the unemployed, unmarried mothers with dependent children, and the disabled.
§ It also set up a pension program for retired workers that taxed both workers and employers to fund the program.
o National Labor Relations Act- right to join a union
o Wagner Act- set up a national Labor Relations board-board able to supervise union elections and investigate unfair labor practices.
o Holding Company Act-Broke up electricity monopoly
o Wealth Tax- Increased tax on wealthy and corporations
o Banking Act- Strengthened Federal Revenue Board
o Rural Electrification Administration- Electricity to Rural areas
o Emergency Relief Appropriations Act-Money to the poor ($5,000,000,000)
o Works Progress Administration (WPA)- set up to improve schools, playgrounds, airports, and hospitals.
