After the Revolutionary War...
- British loyalists still exist in the colonies
- The British themselves are slow to recognize the loyalists
- about 1/6 of colonists chose to be loyal to Britain
- 20,000 separated slaves plus 60-70,000 colonists leave to go elsewhere (mostly Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada)
- Slaves usually excaped to join the military
- Indians sided with the Bristish, American victory would threaten their survival
- 1776- northern New England Indian tribes were fighting against the Americans with the Bristish
- Last (major) battle of the revolution was Yorktown- The French came by sea and fought the British until they surrendered
- John Jay and John Adams- created peace talks with the British, agreed they would recognize the Mississippi River as the western boundary of the United States
- Congress promised to not interfere with Britain to collect debts
- Treaty of Paris- 1783, treaty between Britain and America in which the British promised to recognize western boundaries, American independence, the presence of New England fisherman in Nova Scotia, and Americans promised to let loyalists keep their lands and to not persecute them
