-Origional tells Europe to stay out of West hemisphere in exchange for US doing the same.
-In 1904 Corollary, Roosevelt reasserts origional doctine and adds claims of US to interfere in

The Panama Canal
-Roosevelt convinced of need for canal across Central America
-French company had just gone bankrupt building canal across Columbia's Panama
-Roosevelt negotiates the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty with UK to release both countries from 1850
agreement.
-French company lowers its price for their works in Panama, US shifts focus from Nicaragua to
Panama.
-US Purchases Panama for $40M
-US negotiates Hay-Herron treaty with Columbia for 6-mile wide stri[ across Panama for
$10M with $250K rent.
-When Columbia rejects treaty, Roosevelt encourages rebellion.
-Revolt succeeded because US navy stopped Columbia from landing in Panama.
-US recognizes Panama 2 days after rebellion.
-US signs Hay-Bunea-Varilla Treaty gaining a 10 mile wide canal zone.
-In 1921 US gives Columbia $25M for loss of Panama

Woodrow Wilson and US Imperialism
-Sents troops to Haiti in 1915 to put down revolution and stay 21 years.
-In 191 Wilson forces Dominican Republic to US rule.
-Purchases Virgin Islands from Denmark.

Wilson decides US foreign policy should advance democracy in Mexico and gets caught up.
-Mexican Revolution breaks out in 1910 when dictator Dias is overthrown by Madero
-Madero takes over when US?UK investors own over 1/2 of Mexican real estate, 90% of oil
reserves and almost all railroads.
-Frightens foreign countries
-Madero is overthrown by Huerta in 1913.
-Wilson refuses to recognize him and in 1914 senfs Navy ships into Mexico
-US soldiers end up being arrested at Vera Cruz
-Wilson sends in Naval Fleet and directs them to stop Germans from giving weapons to Mexico
-Occupation of Vera Cruz weakens Huerta and Carranza takes power
-He promises land reforms and nationalization of oil companies
-Wilson recruits Pancho Villa to go against Carranza.
-Carranza defeats Villa and Wilson pulls support
-An angry Villa pulls 18 Americans off a train in New Mexico and kills them. He then crosses
border to kill 17 Americans in New Mexico
-Wilson puts General Pershing to capture Villa. He travels 300 miles into Mexico.
-Pershing's troops are brought back in 1917 when Wilson recognizes Carranza.
